WHOA, TALK ABOUT COLOR!, June 22, 2011

GENERAL

I debated whether to get the speed of the ML248H or the higher contrast of this ML249H for some time. There weren’t any reviews yet of the 249, and I wasn’t able to find either in a store for serious scrutiny. Owners of the ML248H were very happy with their 2ms units. I don’t play games, but I do edit video. I decided to go for the contrast ratio, hoping it was for real, and hoping I wouldn’t be dinged by the slower redraw stats posted by the factory. So far, if there is a penalty for the speed, I haven’t been able to detect it. But the color is amazing.

When my 249 arrived, I was surprised to find you could put the stand together without even thinking about looking for a manual. I had seen reviews of the 248 which suggested assembly might be perplexing, but that’s not the case. There are just two screws with hinged finger drivers; and two pieces to a very sturdy metal base.

I noted also that reviews of the 248 complained of flimsiness in the base. There’s none in the base itself, but there is a fair amount of flexure in the plastic of the case itself, where it is screwed to the upper half of the base. I would say that overall the connection is somewhat more flexible than my iMac — which is pretty solid really. It could be stiffer at the connection to the monitor itself.

The ML249H comes with cables, but I purchased a Mediabridge Ultra Series – High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet – Category 2 Certified – Supports 3D & Audio Return Channel [Latest HDMI Version Available] – (6 Feet), which is also working excellent with the ML249H. I’ve had very good results with Mediabridge in other applications. Ten bucks for a top-of-the-line cable.

All in all, I was up and running in just a few minutes, although the manual was less than most of us would hope for. In the end, the rather scant documentation (and none online at the time I looked for better material) was no problem. You usually expect issues to need coverage. Setup is really too straightforward to believe (stand and all).

APPLICATIONS

I’m using this monitor as a second monitor for an iMac and as a single monitor for a Mac Mini. It’s well tested with both already, and I really think already that it’s an especially awesome monitor. It’s contrast is truly remarkable. Scenery, images, art, are rendered with amazing definition. The best I’ve seen. I’ll point out some important issues about text legibility however below, because the contrast of this monitor is so powerful, you have to adjust well to get the incredible text legibility it delivers as well.

NITPICKING

These are really handsome units. The finish is a flawless gloss black which really has a distinctive look on your desktop. Other new equipment looks like it was designed a long time ago. This ASUS has a body by Fischer. The packaging is great as well. They really go to a lot of trouble to protect the gloss finish.

Then they stick two trivial decals on the front of it. Not only are the “energy efficient” and “try me” decals trivial and redundant, they’re about as appealing as a road kill. These had to go away immediately. The problem I have with that is what solvent do you use? What cloth? After all the trouble they went to to protect the high gloss finish, they stick atrocities on that finish which you’re very likely to damage getting those atrocities off. Mine happened to come off with minimal (if any) effects on the finish; but others might not be so fortunate. Hot water, dish detergent, and a soft paper towel (dry and wet alternately) after carefully peeling both decals off. This is a pretty big issue in my opinion — no more decals please.

The second possible complaint is the manual is like a pseudo document. Just a few words to indicate that assembly is really as simple as it appears to be would be nice. No big deal.

It wasn’t really obvious how to work the controls at first, but in a few seconds of fumbling, you’ll figure them out.

One of the really outstanding properties of the monitor however is how these controls work. You just gently touch them. That’s it. They’re majorly responsive.

MAIN PLUSES

COLOR

Surreal color. Period. You’re just not going to see better definition in surprising elements such as miniature icons reduced from larger, higher definition images. Usual computer objects look really cool. But high definition images are incomparable on this monitor. Even with contrast toned way down, you’re going to see greens, yellows, all sorts of colors you’ve never seen on a computer monitor before. I mean, a *real*, pure canary yellow for instance. Black that is real black. Nothing abnormal; on the contrary, you soon realize you haven’t seen real normal before. Just great color and crispness…

- EXTREMELY easy to use (press button, set your zoom)

- overall, “FOR THE PRICE POINT, and only for general HDTV motion picture recording,” (not still photography) it’s better than most in this price range

- I was glad to have it on a recent trip to Alaska – it is awesomely portable – easy to use even while “zip lining”

I thought I hit the jackpot when I saw this for $299. Full HD, sub compact, excellent lens at f1.8, this was a dream com true! Then I woke up. The lowlight performance isn't that great. Even with super low light selected, and a 1.8 lemse. Best performance is dependent on how much light you have (duh!), but by early evening and with dusk light, you'd think you shot video with an iPhone. Switch grip is a bit fidly. In more Thames one occasion, the image stuck after switching which required me to turn the cam off, then on to gain back control. Once also, the autofocus had a hardtiime switching from a sunny to shady area while on telephoto. It tried several times, but after 30 sec, I had to do the on off routine to reset it. Not good for those instant priceless moments. Hasn't happened agin tho, so I'm Hopi g it's a fluke. On the plus side, it's one of the most comfortable cams to hold. Hardly weighs more than a cell phone. Battery life is good. You get just under 2hrs worth of full HD video with a 16gb card. Wait till it goes on sale. I was looking for a full HD cam but under $250. I thought I hit the jackpot when I saw this for $299. Full HD, sub compact, excellent lens at f1.8, this was a dream com true! Then I woke up. The lowlight performance isn’t that great. Even with super low light selected, and a 1.8 lemse. Best performance is dependent on how much light you have (duh!), but by early evening and with dusk light, you’d think you shot video with an iPhone. Switch grip is a bit fidly. In more Thames one occasion, the image stuck after switching which required me to turn the cam off, then on to gain back control. Once also, the autofocus had a hardtiime switching from a sunny to shady area while on telephoto. It tried several times, but after 30 sec, I had to do the on off routine to reset it. Not good for those instant priceless moments. Hasn’t happened agin tho, so I’m Hopi g it’s a fluke. On the plus side, it’s one of the most comfortable cams to hold. Hardly weighs more than a cell phone. Battery life is good. You get just under 2hrs worth of full HD video with a 16gb card. Wait till it goes on sale. At $299, it’s still an ok cam tho.

First thing to note is despite this being touted as a 23" monitor it's tiny. Now I don't just mean thin (which it really is) but the screen itself just seems so wee. I realize that I'm used to seeing a 28" screen but would ~4" make such a stark difference? Maybe, and of course if you're coming from a smaller monitor then you'll instead probably be amazed at how much bigger this is... it's all relative I guess. The much-welcomed limited bezel around the screen and small base stand does add to the apparent diminutive size. It just seems a tad wider and shorter than it should be - having said that everything looks in proportion, not squished or anything indicating that there's an aspect ratio problem, so it's psychosomatic I guess. When set to its native resolution of 1920x1080 it looks crystal clear. <br/><br/>The monitor itself is advertised as VGA/DVI and HDMI. Now I don't know what happened but mine does not have a HDMI port. There's a space where the connector should be and indeed the manual shows it clearly but it's just not there. Bizarre as I see reviews and specifications discussing HDMI which my monitor just does not have. My model number is definitely S231HL - there's no extra numbers or letters so I guess some iterations were manufactured without HDMI. I feel this is very important to note, especially if you intend to use the monitor as a TV. You should definitely check this first before you even unpack the monitor fully. For me it's no biggy as I'm using the supplied DVI cable so I'm not worried about it. Your mileage and needs may vary. There are also no speakers on this unit which aids in its small size and depth but may be a deal breaker for you. <br/><br/>The screen itself is excellent and has great black levels. The 12 million to 1 contrast ratio is of course a silly spec since it's just the dynamic contrast ratio and, despite some searching online, I cannot absolutely find anywhere that states the much more useful static contrast ratio for this unit. I suspect it's in the 1000:1 range though. I do note that (probably) thanks to the LED back lighting the black levels are excellent when compared to a nearby 800:1 static contrast monitor - so no complaints there. The screen did have a slight greenish hue to it and pure yellow in Photoshop (R:255 G:255 B:0) looked a tad sickly green. So much so that when I turned down the red by 10% it still looked the same. I tried playing with both the nvidia graphic card settings and the monitor settings itself and even installed a shareware app called powerstrip which I've used in the past to acutely control the monitor all to no avail. However, after using the monitor for a week it seems to have 'settled in' and now looks fine which is frankly a little disconcerting! <br/><br/>As a fan of unnecessary super bright LEDs I just have to mention the power light. It a thumbnail sized piece of semi-oval perspex that drips down on the right on the monitor. Nice touch. <br/><br/>So in summation a great monitor at a great price. The initial greeny color and lack of HDMI on my model loses it a star. Tiny slim monitor – great price, May 29, 2011

My 28″ monitor took a dump overnight and so I needed something cheap and usable pronto until I get the chance to replace the capacitors on my larger screen.

I opted for the Acer 231HL due to the ultra slim design and obviously the low cost. First thing to note is despite this being touted as a 23″ monitor it’s tiny. Now I don’t just mean thin (which it really is) but the screen itself just seems so wee. I realize that I’m used to seeing a 28″ screen but would ~4″ make such a stark difference? Maybe, and of course if you’re coming from a smaller monitor then you’ll instead probably be amazed at how much bigger this is… it’s all relative I guess. The much-welcomed limited bezel around the screen and small base stand does add to the apparent diminutive size. It just seems a tad wider and shorter than it should be – having said that everything looks in proportion, not squished or anything indicating that there’s an aspect ratio problem, so it’s psychosomatic I guess. When set to its native resolution of 1920×1080 it looks crystal clear.

The monitor itself is advertised as VGA/DVI and HDMI. Now I don’t know what happened but mine does not have a HDMI port. There’s a space where the connector should be and indeed the manual shows it clearly but it’s just not there. Bizarre as I see reviews and specifications discussing HDMI which my monitor just does not have. My model number is definitely S231HL – there’s no extra numbers or letters so I guess some iterations were manufactured without HDMI. I feel this is very important to note, especially if you intend to use the monitor as a TV. You should definitely check this first before you even unpack the monitor fully. For me it’s no biggy as I’m using the supplied DVI cable so I’m not worried about it. Your mileage and needs may vary. There are also no speakers on this unit which aids in its small size and depth but may be a deal breaker for you.

The screen itself is excellent and has great black levels. The 12 million to 1 contrast ratio is of course a silly spec since it’s just the dynamic contrast ratio and, despite some searching online, I cannot absolutely find anywhere that states the much more useful static contrast ratio for this unit. I suspect it’s in the 1000:1 range though. I do note that (probably) thanks to the LED back lighting the black levels are excellent when compared to a nearby 800:1 static contrast monitor – so no complaints there. The screen did have a slight greenish hue to it and pure yellow in Photoshop (R:255 G:255 B:0) looked a tad sickly green. So much so that when I turned down the red by 10% it still looked the same. I tried playing with both the nvidia graphic card settings and the monitor settings itself and even installed a shareware app called powerstrip which I’ve used in the past to acutely control the monitor all to no avail. However, after using the monitor for a week it seems to have ‘settled in’ and now looks fine which is frankly a little disconcerting!

As a fan of unnecessary super bright LEDs I just have to mention the power light. It a thumbnail sized piece of semi-oval perspex that drips down on the right on the monitor. Nice touch.

So in summation a great monitor at a great price. The initial greeny color and lack of HDMI on my model loses it a star. But honestly for the price it’s a steal – buy two and have a great multi-monitor set up for about the price of just a single competing monitor.

Almost a five star product, but some minor issues. When I opened the box, I was shocked to find an HDMI, DVI, and VGA cable waiting inside. I figured most companies would make you purchase the HDMI and DVI separately, so that was a nice surprise. This is good for the person that doesn't know to tell the Best Buy salesman to piss off when he tries to sell them a Monster HDMI cable for $80. I'm buying another one of these monitors, so that should tell you something. <br/><br/>PROS: <br/>-Excellent picture quality for the price range <br/>-Very small and lightweight, but solid structure (read below about the stand - the exception) <br/>-Sleek, attractive, minimalist design <br/>-Comes with HDMI, DVI, and VGA cords <br/>-No problems interfacing with laptop and desktop computers <br/>-No dead pixels <br/><br/>CONS: <br/>-Less than perfect buttons and user interface <br/>-Can't disable the power button's light <br/>-No extra features like speakers or USB Hub (but I knew that getting into the deal, so I didn't take off any points) <br/><br/>Interfacing: <br/>When I first plugged it into my laptop, there were no problems recognizing it or getting it to display in full resolution. I wasn't too happy with the default coloring (it seemed rather cold to me) so I played with it for a bit, and it looks great now. <br/><br/>User Interface and Buttons: <br/>I was stuck at 4.5 stars, and this is the part that made me go with four stars instead of five. The user interface is pretty bad. The buttons aren't labeled because they are multi-function. When you press any of them, the menu appears on screen and assigns each button an action. You get to choose between a user mode and four others (Eco, Standard, Graphics, and Movies). The customization gives you enough freedom, but physically working with it is just clunky. The buttons would have been a lot easier to use on the side, rather than on the bottom. I would have also liked dedicated Enter and Back/Cancel buttons for the menu. The other problem with the interface is the Power button. It has two LEDs inside - one blue, one orange-yellow. The blue one displays whenever it is turned on and is receiving an image from the computer. When the computer goes to sleep, the button switches to yellow. This is all fine and dandy, but I haven't figured out a way to disable the LEDs. This is kind of annoying because I like my room to be extremely dark at night, and the lights are rather bright. If I find out how to disable these, I'll come back and change the review to five stars. <br/><br/>Picture Quality: <br/>The monitor uses a matte screen, rather than a glossy one. I much prefer this. If you don't know the difference, look it up - matte basically sacrifices a bit of contrast to reduce glare. I use my monitor to watch full HD movies, play games on PS3, and do standard computer work/games. All of it looks even better than on my HDTV (but that's not hard because it's a budget Vizio). I can't say much about hardcore gaming because I'm only a casual gamer. As for video quality, it's a huge step up from my laptop's monitor, but you have to keep in mind that this is a super cheap LED monitor. Don't expect it to match your brand new $3,000 TV for picture quality. For the price, though, I was absolutely thrilled at all aspects of the picture quality. If you check out the specs on it, you won't be very impressed by anything, so I suggest you take a look at it in person if you can. Always trust your own eyes for picture quality, because going by manufacturer specifications alone can be misleading sometimes. Go to a store for viewing before you purchase online, and I think you'll like what you see. <br/><br/>Design and Build Quality: <br/>It is super thin and lightweight, and the frame around the edges is pretty thin, which is nice. That being said, it still feels solid, except for the stand. The stand was a bit of a disappointment, as it's just a tad wobbly and my monitor is (ever so slightly) off level. I'm getting pretty picky here, because you pretty much have to get a level out to notice it. Otherwise, everything is solid, sleek, and sexy. Excellent Value! Buying Another, May 23, 2011

I bought mine 7 months ago, and it was a great value at $180. Almost a five star product, but some minor issues. When I opened the box, I was shocked to find an HDMI, DVI, and VGA cable waiting inside. I figured most companies would make you purchase the HDMI and DVI separately, so that was a nice surprise. This is good for the person that doesn’t know to tell the Best Buy salesman to piss off when he tries to sell them a Monster HDMI cable for $80. I’m buying another one of these monitors, so that should tell you something.

PROS:
-Excellent picture quality for the price range
-Very small and lightweight, but solid structure (read below about the stand – the exception)
-Sleek, attractive, minimalist design
-Comes with HDMI, DVI, and VGA cords
-No problems interfacing with laptop and desktop computers
-No dead pixels

CONS:
-Less than perfect buttons and user interface
-Can’t disable the power button’s light
-No extra features like speakers or USB Hub (but I knew that getting into the deal, so I didn’t take off any points)

Interfacing:
When I first plugged it into my laptop, there were no problems recognizing it or getting it to display in full resolution. I wasn’t too happy with the default coloring (it seemed rather cold to me) so I played with it for a bit, and it looks great now.

User Interface and Buttons:
I was stuck at 4.5 stars, and this is the part that made me go with four stars instead of five. The user interface is pretty bad. The buttons aren’t labeled because they are multi-function. When you press any of them, the menu appears on screen and assigns each button an action. You get to choose between a user mode and four others (Eco, Standard, Graphics, and Movies). The customization gives you enough freedom, but physically working with it is just clunky. The buttons would have been a lot easier to use on the side, rather than on the bottom. I would have also liked dedicated Enter and Back/Cancel buttons for the menu. The other problem with the interface is the Power button. It has two LEDs inside – one blue, one orange-yellow. The blue one displays whenever it is turned on and is receiving an image from the computer. When the computer goes to sleep, the button switches to yellow. This is all fine and dandy, but I haven’t figured out a way to disable the LEDs. This is kind of annoying because I like my room to be extremely dark at night, and the lights are rather bright. If I find out how to disable these, I’ll come back and change the review to five stars.

Picture Quality:
The monitor uses a matte screen, rather than a glossy one. I much prefer this. If you don’t know the difference, look it up – matte basically sacrifices a bit of contrast to reduce glare. I use my monitor to watch full HD movies, play games on PS3, and do standard computer work/games. All of it looks even better than on my HDTV (but that’s not hard because it’s a budget Vizio). I can’t say much about hardcore gaming because I’m only a casual gamer. As for video quality, it’s a huge step up from my laptop’s monitor, but you have to keep in mind that this is a super cheap LED monitor. Don’t expect it to match your brand new $3,000 TV for picture quality. For the price, though, I was absolutely thrilled at all aspects of the picture quality. If you check out the specs on it, you won’t be very impressed by anything, so I suggest you take a look at it in person if you can. Always trust your own eyes for picture quality, because going by manufacturer specifications alone can be misleading sometimes. Go to a store for viewing before you purchase online, and I think you’ll like what you see.

Design and Build Quality:
It is super thin and lightweight, and the frame around the edges is pretty thin, which is nice. That being said, it still feels solid, except for the stand. The stand was a bit of a disappointment, as it’s just a tad wobbly and my monitor is (ever so slightly) off level. I’m getting pretty picky here, because you pretty much have to get a level out to notice it. Otherwise, everything is solid, sleek, and sexy. Nothing flashy, just a nice, simple design.

The monitor had a very nice picture for the month that it was functioning. When it went black suddenly, I was sent into the ASUS Customer Service abyss. All phone calls seemed to send me back to the website… which was useless. I finally managed to get an RMA and sent the monitor back at my cost. After 5 weeks with no email or calls as to the status of the monitor, I finally received my supposedly repaired monitor back. Blacks are red. The picture quality is terrible with ghosting and flickering everywhere. Clearly nobody even looked at the monitor after “repairing” it.

I will seek a refund and will never purchase ASUS products again.
